Die leidige Presse

Was mich immer noch schmerzlich berührt bei all dem Schönen in unserer Beziehung, ist das rücksichtslose Verhalten der Boulevardpresse im Umgang mit uns. Elvis und ich waren ein Spielball der Presse. Geradezu abenteuerliche Geschichten wurden erfunden. Warum eigentlich? Vermutlich weil Häme und Verächtlich machen sowohl den Journalisten als auch den Lesern mehr „Spaß“ macht, als seriöse Berichterstattung und weil es mehr Profit erzeugt !?

Konkret haben sich drei Blätter unrühmlich hervorgetan: die „Bravo“, die „Bild“ und das „Time“- Magazin.

Über Elvis lautete eine der reißerischen Schlagzeilen in der Bild-Zeitung sinngemäß: „Weiß er nicht, wie es geht?“ - Frustrierte Damen hätten fluchtartig sein Zimmer verlassen, weil Elvis „nur kuscheln wollte“...

Diese Behauptungen sind verletzend. Die Presse erfand Sensationen auf Kosten anderer. Wollte die Presse Elvis nicht nur als Sexsymbol, sondern auch plump beim Liebesakt vorführen und vermarkten? Sollte die Provokation dazu dienen, dass Elvis das Gegenteil bewies, oder dass er sich für die von ihm bevorzugte Art der Intimität rechtfertigte? Elvis war im Bett nicht nur zärtlich, sondern auch äußerst verantwortungsvoll. Er nutzte Vertrauen nicht aus, aber er vermied ganz bewusst Schwangerschaften. Jedenfalls vermisste ich nichts ! Elvis war in allem ein Meister !

Die „BamS“ stand in Sachen verfälschender Berichterstattung der großen Schwester in nichts nach.¹⁵

Ein Reporter des Blattes meldete sich eines Tages. Er wünschte sich ein Interview mit mir über meine Beziehung mit Elvis. Ich hatte nichts dagegen. Meine Mama war vorsichtshalber anwesend. Doch haben wir beide nicht bemerkt, wie uns dieser Mann hinters Licht führte. Vor einigen Jahren bat ich die Redaktion der BamS, mir den betreffenden Artikel zuzusenden. Man teilte mir mit, er sei nicht auffindbar. Ich ließ es dann dabei bewenden. Vielleicht schickt man mir den Artikel ja noch zu. Leider zerriss mein erster Mann die Originalausgabe aus Eifersucht.

Ich weiß noch, dass ich mich darüber etwas wunderte, dass der Reporter der BamS weder fotografierte, noch von mir Bilder haben wollte. Eventuell wollte er sich aus dem Ufa-Archiv bedienen. Es beschäftigte mich jedenfalls nicht weiter. Aber eines macht mich heute noch wütend: Ich erzählte ihm, dass Elvis haufenweise Autogramme schrieb und sich dabei von seiner Entourage helfen ließ. Etliche der Bad Nauheimer Autogramme stammten also nicht von ihm selber. Auch ich könne übrigens seine Signatur nachmachen, erzählte ich weiter. Doch da Elvis dies nie in Anspruch genommen hatte, ist kein von mir hergestelltes Autogramm im Umlauf. Der Reporter hielt mir prompt ein Zettelchen hin und bat mich zu zeigen, wie ich es mache. Arglos erhielt er von mir ein gefaktes Elvis-Autogramm. Dass bei mir nicht sämtliche Alarmglocken läuteten, verstehe ich bis heute nicht.

Der Reporter verabschiedete sich artig mit Komplimenten an die Mama, als sei er gut erzogen, und weg war er...

Am nächsten Sonntag schlug ich die Bild am Sonntag auf und war geschockt. - Das einzige Foto, riesig groß, zeigte meine Elvis-Unterschrift!! Im Text stand sinngemäß: „Schaut mal nach, liebe Elvisfans, ob ihr ein echtes oder ein gefälschtes Autogramm besitzt.“ Im Artikel wurde ich regelrecht vorgeführt. Unverschämt ! Für mich war es einfach nur spaßig, Elvis und seinen Leuten beim Autogramme schreiben zuzusehen und es ebenfalls mal auszuprobieren.

Der Vorfall beweist, dass es der Presse oft vor allem darum geht, vermeintlich Sensationelles zu verbreiten, um die Auflagenhöhe des Profits wegen in die Höhe zu treiben.

Eine schöne Ausnahme inmitten der würdelosen Schlagzeilen und Artikel der Bild-Zeitung war folgende: „Familienforscher: Elvis stammt aus der Pfalz“. Im Artikel dann die Vermutung, warum Elvis sich so zu Deutschland hingezogen fühle: Elvis Vorfahren stammen aus Neustadt an der Weinstraße. Sie waren Winzer. Mit einem der Nachkommen habe ich einmal telefoniert. Er bestätigte mir Elvis‘ Herkunft. Den Namen Pressler hatten die in die USA ausgewanderten Familienmitglieder anglisieren lassen. Sie hießen dort fortan „Presley“.

Laut Bild soll Elvis über seinen Aufenthalt in Deutschland geschwärmt haben: „Es war die schönste Zeit meines Lebens“. Er soll beim Abschied geweint haben, als er das Flugzeug bestieg, das ihn zurück nach Amerika brachte... Diese Geschichte mag ich sehr, auch wenn sie wahrscheinlich wieder einmal frei erfunden ist.

Das Teenager-Blatt „Bravo“ stand der „Bild“ in Sachen Wahrheitsverdrehung in nichts nach.¹⁶ Die Serie mit dem unsinnigen Titel „Meine Zeit wird kommen“ (seine Zeit war schon längst da...) hat dem Magazin, neben „Starschnitten“ von Elvis (und der Bardot), zu einer Traumauflage verholfen. Die Macher scherten sich offensichtlich wenig um seriöse Berichterstattung.

Es war eine Zeit der gesellschaftlichen Neuorientierung und des beginnenden Weltwirtschaftswunders. Der Zweite Weltkrieg lag erst 14 Jahre zurück. Eine kleine Episode am Rande zeigt die damalige Wahrnehmung und Wertung.

Als ich bei einem Ball meiner Schiller (-Mädchen-) Schule mit der befreundeten Goethe (-Jungen-) Schule zur Dekoration den Bardot-Starschnitt beisteuerte, war das ein Skandal!! Die Bardot im sexy „Outfit“ wurde als extrem unanständig empfunden und schamvoll zur Seite gelegt.

Apropos Skandal: Was die Bravo über mich in dieser Serie zusammengedichtet hat, ist skandalös. Dieser falschen Berichterstattung hatte ich es zu „verdanken“, dass ich buchstäblich Waschkörbe voller Briefe mit unterschiedlichsten Reaktionen erhielt. Die gesamte Bandbreite an Emotionen, zu denen ein Mensch fähig ist, schlug mir entgegen: Hass, Neid, Gier und Autogrammwünsche. Aber auch Liebesbezeugungen und waren en Masse enthalten. Sie galten Elvis und lustigerweise auch mir.

Im März 2021 meldete sich die Bestseller-Autorin Suzanne Finstad (Child Bride) aus Los Angeles per E-Mail bei meiner Verlegerin. Renowed Films aus London¹⁷ würde mich gerne in eine neue Doku-Serie über Elvis einbeziehen. Ihr Agent von Renaissance Management¹⁸ hatte das Anliegen per E-Mail bestätigt. Der Wunsch war ein Interview via Zoom. Es sollte vor allem darum gehen, wie und wann ich Elvis traf - und um die Art der Beziehung. Ein ähnliches Interview hätte bereits mit Currie Grant stattgefunden. Laut Finstad arbeitete sie mit der Filmgesellschaft bereits seit über einem Jahr an dieser Dokumentation. Sie betonte, dass mein Auftritt mir und meinen Memoiren internationale Aufmerksamkeit verschaffen würde. Zur direkten Kontaktaufnahme schickte sie ihre Telefonnummer. Sie bot auch Curris Telefonnummer an. Er sei es gewesen, der meine Teilnahme an der Dokumentation empfohlen habe. Sie habe von Currie bereits so viel von mir gehört. – Doch aufgrund meiner Erfahrungen mit der Presse und aufgrund des Wissens, das Currie von Pricilla Geld bezieht für die Verbreitung einer ihr angenehmen Version über die damalige Zeit, habe ich abgelehnt. Mich würde nicht wundern, wenn hinter der Story, eine Doku drehen zu wollen, ganz andere Interessen stecken. Ich möchte mich ungern erneut zum Spielball machen lassen. Ich muss mich nicht rechtfertigen. Meine Erlebnisse stehen in diesem Buch.

Meist geht es ums Geld: 2025 besuchte Priscilla Bad Nauheim. Eine Journalistin hatte die Idee, mit meinem Buch einen Bezug zu Bad Nauheim herzustellen. Sie fragte Priscilla in der Pressekonferenz nach mir und erwähnte mein Buch. Ihre Frage wurde nicht zugelassen und barsch abgewiesen. Anderntags wurde die Journalistin beim „Meet & Greet“ sogar arg beschimpft und es wurde ihr die Akkreditierung entzogen. Das tut mir sehr leid für sie, denn eigentlich war ich gemeint.

Es wurde öffentlich sichtbar, dass ich für Priscilla ein „rotes Tuch“ bin. Ihr wird bemüht der Anschein von Wahrheit und Aufrichtigkeit verliehen. Ich kann gut verstehen, warum das so ist. Diese Oberfläche erhielt durch die Aggressivität ihrer Entourage erneut Risse.¹⁹

The terrible press

What still hurts me, despite all the beauty in our relationship, is the ruthless behavior of the yellow press in their dealings with us. Elvis and I were the media‘s plaything. They invented truly outrageous stories. Why, exactly? Presumably because both journalists and readers enjoy malice and contempt more than serious reporting, and because it generates more profit !?

Specifically, three newspapers have distinguished themselves in an ignominious manner: The „Bravo“, the „Bild“, and the „Time“ magazine.

One of the sensationalist headlines about Elvis in the „Bild“ newspaper read something like: „Doesn‘t he know how it‘s done?“ - Frustrated women fled his room because Elvis „just wanted to cuddle“...

These claims are hurtful. The press invented sensations at the expense of others. Did the press want to showcase and market Elvis not only as a sex symbol, but also crudely during the act of love? Was the provocation intended to prove Elvis wrong, or to justify his preferred kind of intimacy? Elvis was not only affectionate in bed, but also extremely responsible. He didn‘t abuse trust, but he deliberately avoided pregnancies. In any case, I didn‘t miss a thing ! Elvis was a master at everything !

The „BamS“ newspaper was in no way inferior to its big sister when it came to distorted reporting.¹⁵

A reporter from the newspaper contacted me one day. He wanted to interview me about my relationship with Elvis. I didn‘t mind. My mom was there just in case. But neither of us realized how this man was duping us. A few years ago, I asked the BamS editorial team to send me this article. They told me it couldn‘t be found. I let it go. Perhaps they‘ll still send it to me. Unfortunately, my first husband tore up the original issue out of jealousy.

I remember being a bit surprised that the BamS reporter neither took photographs nor wanted any pictures from me. Perhaps he wanted to use the Ufa archives. In any case, it didn‘t concern me any further. But one thing still angers me today: I told him that Elvis signed tons of autographs and had his entourage help him with them. So, several of the Bad Nauheim autographs weren‘t his. Incidentally, I could also copy his signature, I continued. But since Elvis never took advantage of this, no autograph I made is in circulation. The reporter promptly handed me a piece of paper and asked me to show him how I did it. He innocently received a fake Elvis autograph from me. Why all the alarm bells didn‘t ring in my head is something I still don‘t understand.

The reporter politely said goodbye with compliments to my mother, as if he were well-behaved, and then he was up and away.

The next Sunday, I opened the „Bild am Sonntag“ (BamS) and was shocked. The only photo, huge and large, showed my Elvis signature !! The text read something like: „Take a look, dear Elvis fans, and see if you have a real or a fake autograph.“ The article was a real show-off. Outrageous ! For me, it was just fun to watch Elvis and his staff sign autographs and to give it a try myself.

The incident proves that the press is often primarily concerned with spreading supposedly sensational stories in order to boost circulation for profit.

A nice exception amidst the undignified headlines and articles in the „Bild“ newspaper was the following: „Family researcher: Elvis comes from the Palatinate.“ The article then suggested why Elvis felt so drawn to Germany: Elvis's ancestors came from Neustadt an der Weinstraße. They were winemakers. I once spoke to one of their descendants on the phone. He confirmed Elvis‘s origins. The family members who had emigrated to the USA had the name Pressler anglicized. From then on, they were called „Presley“.

According to the „Bild“, Elvis is said to have raved about his stay in Germany: „It was the best time of my life.“ He is said to have cried as he said goodbye as he boarded the plane that took him back to America... I like this story a lot, even though it‘s probably completely made up again.

The teen magazine „Bravo“ was in no way inferior to „Bild“ when it came to distorting the truth.¹⁶ The series with the nonsensical title „My Time Will Come“ (his time had long since arrived...), along with „star cutouts“ of Elvis (and Bardot), helped the magazine achieve dream circulation. The editors obviously cared little about serious reporting.

It was a time of social reorientation and the beginning of the global economic miracle. The Second World War had only been 14 years ago. A small incident in passing illustrates the perception and evaluation of that time.

When I contributed a Bardot cutout to the decorations for a ball at my Schiller (girls‘) school and the friendly Goethe (boys‘) school, it was a scandal ! Bardot in her sexy „outfit“ was considered extremely indecent and shamefully put aside.

I had this false reporting to thank for literally receiving laundry baskets full of letters with a wide variety of reactions. The entire spectrum of emotions a person is capable of was thrown at me: hatred, envy, greed, and requests for autographs. But there were also expressions of love in abundance. They were for Elvis and, funnily enough, for me, too.

Renowed Films from London¹⁷ would like to include me in a new documentary series about Elvis. Her agent from Renaissance Management¹⁸ had confirmed the request by email. According to Finstad, she had been working with the film company on this documentary for over a year. She emphasized that my appearance would bring me and my memoirs international attention. She sent her phone number for direct contact. She also offered Currie‘s phone number. He, she said, was the one who recommended my participation in the documentary. She had already heard so much about me from Currie. However, based on my experience with the press and the knowledge that Currie receives money from Pricilla to spread a version of the era that she approves of, I declined. I wouldn‘t be surprised if there were completely different interests behind the story of wanting to make a documentary. I don‘t want to be used as a pawn again. I don‘t have to justify myself. My experiences are in this book.

It‘s mostly about money: In 2025, Priscilla visited Bad Nauheim. A journalist had the idea of using my book to connect to Bad Nauheim. She asked Priscilla about me at the press conference and mentioned my book. Her question was not allowed and was harshly dismissed. The next day, the journalist was even severely insulted at the „meet & greet“ and her accreditation was revoked. I feel very sorry for her, because I was the one they were actually referring to. It became publicly apparent that I am a „red rag“ to Priscilla. She is trying to give her the appearance of truth and sincerity. I can well understand why this is so. This surface was cracked again by the aggressiveness of her entourage.¹⁹

             Bravo war – vor allem in den 1970er und 1980er Jahren – prägend und stilbildend für viele Jahrgänge von Jugendlichen. Das Heft wurde in einigen Schulen von den Lehrern konfisziert. I wouldn‘t be surprised if there were completely different interests behind the story of wanting to make a documentary. I don‘t want to be used as a pawn again. I don‘t have to justify myself. My experiences are in this book.

It‘s mostly about money: In 2025, Priscilla visited Bad Nauheim. A journalist had the idea of using my book to connect to Bad Nauheim. She asked Priscilla about me at the press conference and mentioned my book. Her question was not allowed and was harshly dismissed. The next day, the journalist was even severely insulted at the „meet & greet“ and her accreditation was revoked. I feel very sorry for her, because I was the one they were actually referring to. It became publicly apparent that I am a „red rag“ to Priscilla. She is trying to give her the appearance of truth and sincerity. I can well understand why this is so. This surface was cracked again by the aggressiveness of her entourage.¹⁹

With this, one could piece together the individual pieces that appeared from issue to issue (like a puzzle) to create a life-size poster of the star - a means of fostering reader loyalty. A striking feature of Bravo‘s language is the relatively high number of Anglicisms and "Denglish" terms. This development began as early as the mid-1980s.

Bravo was influential and style-setting for many generations of young people - especially in the 1970s and 1980s. The magazine was confiscated by teachers in some schools. Heli von Westrem war mit Elvis Presley während seiner Dienstzeit als G.I. mehr als befreundet. Sie gibt uns Einblick in ihr damaliges Leben. Der teilweise haarsträubenden Legendenbildung möchte sie nicht mehr länger tatenlos zusehen. Heli nimmt uns unter anderem mit zu sich und Elvis in die Goethestraße 14, in die Friedberger Kaserne und nach Paris. Eine angebliche Entführung von Elvis auf den Johannisberg löste einen Zustrom von Fan-Briefen an sie aus.  Einige von ihnen sind im Buch enthalten. - Helis' Erinnerungen und die Briefe sind ein Spiegel der damaligen Zeit. 

Elvis und Heli liebten sich Ende der 50er Jahre während seiner Militärzeit in Deutschland. Startum, Liebe, Rock 'n' Roll, Freiheitsdrang und Nachkriegszeit prägen Heli von Westrems Autobiografie.

Geboren wurde Autorin Heli von Westrem als Heli Priemel am 28.6.1943 in Potsdam-Babelsberg (Ufa-Stadt); 1945 erfolgte die Flucht nach Garmisch-Partenkirchen und dann weiter nach Frankfurt am Main. Heli von Westrem wirkte mit in vielen Filmen ihrer Eltern. 1957 war sie erstmals Mannequin einer Modenschau des Modehauses Pfüller. 1959 trat sie im 1. Deutschen Fernsehen als „Annabell“ in der Ratesendung von Hans Joachim Kulenkampff „Sieben auf einen Streich“ mit dem damaligen Schlagerstar Willy Hagara auf. Im Mai desselben Jahres begann ihre Beziehung mit Elvis Presley. Ab 1961 vervollkommnete sie mit Auslandsaufenthalten in England, Spanien und Frankreich ihre Sprachkenntnisse. Ihr Cambridge-Diplom erhielt sie in London. Beim Hessischen Rundfunk arbeitete Heli von Westrem als Regieassistentin. Ab 1964 war sie Stewardess bei der Air France. Ein Jahr nach Elvis‘ Hochzeit, 1968, heiratete sie Rolf Staguhn, einen hervorragenden Tennisspieler, dessen Spielqualität vergleichbar war mit der von Boris Becker. Beide haben am gleichen Tag Geburtstag. In den 70er Jahren eröffnete Heli von Westrem gemeinsam mit ihrer Schwester eine Boutique. Es folgten Auftritte als Mannequin und als Moderatorin bei Modenschauen. 1978 begegnete ihr Rudolf Constantin, ein begnadeter Opernsänger, der Elvis ähnlich sah und der in seinem Genre, der Oper, wie Elvis, die Frauen bezauberte. 1982 heirateten Heli und Rudolf Constantin.

Currie Grant traf sich mit Heli im Airport Hotel Frankfurt wenige Tage nach Elvis Presleys offiziellem Tod und zitierte Elvis: „The only girl I ever loved, was Heli!“
